[Incomplete Lesson Plan] Propaganda Lesson + Explanation (Made 2023 Fall Semester)
My lesson will begin with an introduction to Propaganda, what it is, and how it is utilized to twist events to the benefit of a group. This will be done with a slideshow showing propaganda from the left and the right over the Ukraine War alongside information on the actual events that inspired the propaganda and the different sides beliefs and goals. Afterwards I will discuss with my class what imagery was used and why, then break down the imagery of the propaganda, its use, and why it was used. The final part of this lesson will be the most complicated part as I will present 3 small but detailed and relatively unbiased articles about 3 historical events alongside 3 breakdowns of two groups invested in those events, and task my students with picking one of these 3, reading the provided documents, and then utilizing Canva, explained quickly via slideshow, to create a piece of propaganda from the perspective of one of the groups provided to them. This assignment would hopefully take up the bulk of the class time, assuming 40-50 minute classes, and teach them the process through which propaganda is created, the mindset of the creators, and better media literacy.
The showing and explaining of pieces of propaganda would give auditory and visual learners an opportunity to learn while priming kinesthetic learners for the activity which would act as their primary source of learning. The other learners would experience the project as a way to further explore propaganda and understand it better, keeping this from being only useful to the Kinesthetic learners. This is also important for students as it helps them build their logical-thinking and reasoning skills, giving them an open-ended assignment that has no right answer, instead forcing themselves to empathize with people unknown to them and view a historical event from their perspective, not being taught to agree or disagree with them, but instead to think accurately from their perspective to create something representative of their beliefs.
